The Sisters of Mercy

The Sisters of Mercy are an international community of Roman Catholic women who dedicate their lives to the Gospel of Jesus and take vows of poverty, chastity, obedience and service.

Inspired by the life of Jesus and by our founder Catherine McAuley, they envision a just world for people who are poor, sick and uneducated and commit their lives to God and resources to serve, advocate and pray for those in need around the world.

In 1890 the Sisters of Mercy established a community in Jamaica, at the bequest of His Lordship, the Right Revd. C. Gordon, DD, then Bishop of Jamaica. His request came in response to the worthy cause started by Jessie Ripoll in 1880 who had started an orphanage for girls which.

The Sisters began an extraordinary mission of mercy in their new homeland establishing several schools and orphanages in keeping with their mission and critical concerns.

Today they remain committed to their first project ‘Alpha” and are integrally involved in the leadership and campus Ministry at the Convent of Mercy Academy.
